Knowing Why.

I may not have traveled the years of experience that others have yet, there are a few things that I have discovered along the way

One of those is that within all of us is a desire to make a difference. I believe that many desire to help others and  are motivated by a deep or more meaningful experience in life. It seems to be within our nature to help another.

Look for example, the many times that people have stepped up to help others in-need during a national crisis or global tragedy. We all have a desire to be helpful. Look at any organization and you will see that. Organizations experience an increase in volunteerism and donations that are abundant.

Hopefully we can say that growth of philanthropy is up when we reflect upon our global response to the pandemic but, only time will tell. Early in 2020 we did see an increase in financial contributions.

Today I want to explore this a little deeper. It’s a curious thing to me. I often wonder what motivates us to become more philanthropic. Certainly, it appears as though many have the resources to give. We also know that people seem to set aside time to help one another when called upon. I believe that everyone wants to make an impact.

It seems as though helping others is within our DNA. Maybe it’s because at sometime in our past we were in-need and someone helped us. Perhaps we responded with a level of thankfulness. Perhaps it’s because we are much more aware than we have ever been of the incredible need of others. We have sources through social media like never before. Our phone sends us notifications at an unprecedented level. 

Yet, I am curious of the motivation. Perhaps there is a part of God’s design within His creation that motivates us to act. I don’t believe that everyone is motivated by what they get out of it financially or through status. Call me a purist but I believe that people have a genuine desire to make a difference in others.

Some might even call me naïve to believe in the purest intent of humanity. It could be that I am looking at life with rose colored glasses. Of course, I see how selfish we can be as well. Look at how many times people have stocked up on supplies, emptying shelves of toilet paper and other necessities in order to hoard these items for themselves. 

A few years back when the world seem to be concerned about Y2K. (1999) I remember when our Boys Brigade ministry went out to collect our annual food campaign. Within a few weeks of the new year (2000) we scheduled an additional collection thinking that since we survived Y2K, the power systems didn’t crash and Banks did not fail that perhaps there are a few people that have a surplus. That year was a goal-setting year, a bumper crop! We collected more food than we had ever done before and much of it was in bulk supplies. We received canisters and buckets filled with grain & other goods. It was remarkable. So, I’m not that naïve to believe that people do hoard for themselves.

I do believe that people want to make a difference. I believe that Christians know why!

Yet, no matter the motivation or level of philanthropy, I believe that God has instilled this within all of us as a part of his creation. Many use this to promote their status. Perhaps many others use it like a drug; feeling good about themselves.

I do believe that the goodwill of mankind is something that God has instilled within us and it was not lost because of the Fall & disobedience of Adam. Scripture seems to support this idea when I read passages like: Matthew 25 or 2 Corinthians 9 or Luke 10. These passage give direct evidence of our humanity and desire to help others.

Matthew 25:35 I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger, and you took me into your home.

2 Corinthians 9:8 reads; And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

Luke 10:35 The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.

Even throughout the Old Testament are passages the talk about having a generous spirit. Consider: Proverbs 11:24–25 or Proverbs 22:9. Read more HERE.

I believe Christians understand why we are generous. Christians have a good understanding, or at least should have an understanding that our goodness is for God’s  glory. We also should understand that no amount of goodness will gain us access into heaven. We must be born again by the spirit of God.

As we gain our understanding of why we do ministry and are charitable, we better communicate the hope that we have through Christ Jesus. It is not for ourselves nor for any kind of personal satisfaction or gain. As Christians, we know why because of our relationship with Christ. All that we do is for gods glory and for the building up of His kingdom here on earth.

We should never let our ego get the best of us or have a false doctrine is if , somehow, it will gain any extra favor from God. We love because God loves us. We give because it has been given to us through Christ Jesus. We, as Christians know why!

Today I couldn’t help but share with you some of the references of the scripture on this Tuesday filled with “two’s-day” on 2-22-22.

Your Biographical Sketch.

Have you ever thought about how you would summarize your life? Each of us perceive our value and worth in our own way. Some focus on relationships while others on task or titles. It’s a rather challenging thing to think about. 

I once was challenged that I should write out my obituary. I don’t like to think about those kinds of things. It is rather morbid! Yet, it can be a tool that could help to discover my purpose and meaning in life. It is most helpful to know your purpose but I like what Mark Twain once wrote. “There are two important day in your life. The day you are born and the day you discover why.”

Albert Schweitzer once wrote a maxim to life that for Christians is of high importance. We need to be people who serve!

"I don't know what know: the ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve. -Albert Schweitzer, 1875

I have attended hundreds of funerals and officiated over the service of many others. As peculiar as it sounds, it is one of my more favorite religious responsibilities. I would much prefer to do a funeral than I would a wedding, though I have actually done hundreds of those. I know that sounds weird!

Well, here it goes, my biographical sketch.

Reverend Rick Carder serves as the Director of Church Outreach for Josiah White’s, a Christian family services ministry headquartered in Wabash, IN. Rick has served in various Christian ministries since 1987, and was ordained by the Wesleyan Church in 1989. Prior to serving with Josiah White’s, Rick served in alumni and church engagement with Indiana Wesleyan University. Rick has also served within the Wesleyan Church in various capacities including as a pastor and youth pastor. Rick is passionate about serving foster parents and foster children. Rick and his wife Cindi were foster parents for eight years, and Rick has served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for children in foster care. Rick believes in the life-changing power of the Gospel, and is thankful to be a part of a ministry that offers new possibilities for children and families.  

This biographical sketch was written by the marketing team of Josiah White’s as a tool to help organizations to have a bit of a background whenever I speak to a group.

Ecclesiastes 1:2-3 says that life is vanity; it will quickly pass. In the Voice translation we find a clarity of meaning to these often quote passages.

2 Teacher: Life is fleeting, like a passing mist.
        It is like trying to catch hold of a breath;
    All vanishes like a vapor; everything is a great vanity.
3     What good does it do anyone to work so hard again and again,
        sun up to sundown? All his labor to gain but a little? (The Voice. Ecclesiastes 1:2-3)

It’s a sobering thought to think that all of us have a life expectancy. For many do exceed that number, if there are many tragedies of those who die young. Songs have been created and mini books have been written but help to validate the nature of life.

Yet, the scripture tells us that we should yield our time and attention to the Lord. Each of us are given the same amount of time no matter how long we live. The Bible tells us that we live day by day. While many set calendars months and even years down the road yet, there is no guarantee except the one given to us by our creator.

I say more and more often, “if it be your will”. I believe that it is a healthy expression to consider the fact that our life is in God’s hands. As we walked through life being humble and grateful for each and every day that we are given, may we do our giving while we’re living and invest ourselves into the lives of others; for future generations and not just our own!

First Impressions!

First impressions can be lasting impressions. It's often the first time we meet someone that may impact our beliefs about another; creating distance in the relationship.

I once visited a church that I was asked to preach at. As I arrived early to prepare the man at the entrance said to me, “We were ties in this church!” I obviously didn’t wear a tie with my outfit. I was taking back a bit. Joking I said to him, “You must own the place?” With that I proceeded, not taking a serious offense doesn’t matter. After the service let me in came right up to me, after hearing my message he stated, “Sir, that statement I said to you at the entrance doesn’t pertain to you!”

Talk about leaving the lasting impression, I will never forget that interaction. It’s all too often that negative impressions linger in our lives far too long. It may cause us to add distance to our opportunities!

The patriarchs & prophets of the Bible left initial impressions. As you read the old testament you may get a certain impression about those culture and time we’re very different than our own. In fact, we often place our current culture and expectations over historical times which leaves us with a negative impression. History‘s values must be judged by those times.

One interesting story from the old testament vols man who had leprosy. This man was a mighty warrior but suffered from this horrible illness. A young handmaiden desired that this man would be healed is that word that he should go see a man that had the reputation of healing. Naaman perhaps felt a little slighted from the interaction when the prophet did not come out to meet him in any proper manner. Elijah simply gave instruction for what the man was to do to be healed. The captain of the army was insulted but later was encouraged to follow through with the instructions which resulted in his healing.

Naamam's (Captain of Aram's Army) first impression of Elisha almost cost him a miracle. (2 Kings 5) 

Our first impression of the church could miss out on a blessing. I often tell people that the church will let you down. People in the church are not perfect. That is why we need to keep our eyes on Jesus who is the author and finisher of our faith! While many have an impression of the church and we must represent the church and our Christ well, we cannot give up on the opportunity to receive a blessing. (Read Psalm 122:1)

Indiana has the reputation of being fickle given the weather patterns. Sometimes it is up and other times it is down! We often tell each other about the weather, if you don’t like what you see, just wait, it will change! The beauty all around us is a reminder of God’s blessings! Though it may rain and storms come, we must be reminded to wait upon the Lord because out of the storm come great blessings!

 Happy Valentine’s Day conjures up all kinds of images. Its origin is not necessarily found in the Bible though its actions can, and should originate there. A form of love is found in a physical attraction but it must be deeper than that!

Love can be cheap but true love is true and eternal. In the English language the word love is used to describe everything from pizza to possessions.

Most relationships begin with an attraction, mostly physical. It’s unfortunate that many relationships stay at that level. One of the major reasons for divorce is infidelity. It seems as though the depth, or lack there of, is the cause of many break ups. With the divorce rate well over 60% in our North American culture, it’s no wonder the people hesitate to get married. Yet, not surprisingly mini decide to live together prior to marriage is if it’s some kind of a practice session. Nevertheless, even those relationships that end up married ultimately fail.  Practice does not make perfect in this case.

It is said that love is blind but it makes for lasting relationships. Others may ask, "What do they see in each other?" Many may have doubted. yet, my parents have over 65 years of marriage Having raised 8 children, they demonstrated commitment to family. 

God's LOVE is different. Packed in those four little letters are sacrifice, commitment, patience, and the list goes on. These qualities originate with God!

Understandably valentines day celebrations are reduced to simply an exchange of my needs and wants and not giving that it takes to be successful in marriage. Of course marriage is about uniting our hearts around a simple understanding of an unconditional exchange of commitment that may include physical attraction but deeply meaningful exchange of vows.

Scripture says that hearts are united and become one in purpose, meaningful expressions of true love, as well as a spiritual depth that is demonstrated in scripture. 

God‘s love for is unconditional. God‘s love was demonstrated by sacrifice and commitment. God‘s love is a free gift. What gods love is transformational as well. It changes our heart from just being selfish and needy to giving! 

1 John provides evidence of what true love is. First Corinthians 13 teaches us the very definition of authentic love. Ephesians 5 teachers us the depths of our commitment to love one another.

Scripture tells us that perfect love cast out fear.  Through the  scripture we also understand what true love does. It tells us not to act on selfish motivations. Scripture teaches us what a healthy marriage can be. In God‘s love letter to us, the Bible we can discover eternal values that promote lasting love through biblical truth.

Can you hear God say, "I love you"? What are you willing to give up to show true and lasting love?

Bleak!

 

GOOD WORDS . . . 

The forecast may seem bleak; after all, it is winter in Indiana. Cloudy with a chance of snow…. Most don’t realize it but an optimist would remind us that above the clouds it is always sunny!

From a spiritual standpoint, we all should be optimist. We should see the Hope that we have in Christ.

It is always a matter of perspective that changes our mood and transforms our gloom to glee. In Christ, we can be warmed by the ray of light that come from the SON. 

Habakkuk 3:4 tells us that God is filled with rays of light. 

I have heard all about you, LORD. I am filled with awe by your amazing works. In this time of our deep need, help us again as you did in years gone by. And in your anger, remember your mercy.

 What do you see when you look outside today? What do you feel when you look to Jesus?

Restoring Relationships through Christ: Reciprocity Matters.

Today we need to discover what it means to become new in Christ and the wonderful impact it has in us, our humanity, and our community!

Read 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 (NLT): 

“So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now! This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. “

The old life is gone; a new life has begun! And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. 

And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. 

And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!” 

For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

“Forgiveness may be one-sided. But reconciliation requires both parties to be willing to participate in restoring the relationship.” - Reference

1.  RE-Created in Christ - God’s Gift to us!

We are saved for a purpose! Redeemed to reconcile the world in Christ! 

The OLD life is gone and a NEW life has begun! 

We are RE-created in Christ.

—- this new life is filled with eternal values and we live by different principles!

It is the result of a gift to us! 

—- this grace given to us makes us agents of grace … like the spreading of a cure for Illness.

Once we understand this grace (free gift) we are motivated to a purpose! 

In Christian terms, grace can be generally defined as “God’s favor toward the unworthy” or “God’s benevolence on the undeserving.” In His grace, God is willing to forgive us and bless us, despite the fact that we fall short of living righteously. Reference

Grace is the opposite of karma, which is all about getting what you deserve. Grace is getting what you don’t deserve. — Justin Holcomb

The word “reconciliation” is less commonly used. And generally, at least in the Scripture, it deals with the relationship between God and humanity. Reconciliation is the Greek word katallagē, meaning “an exchange; reconciliation, restoration to favor.” (Ed Jarrett, CT.com)

This gift to us means that we are motivated to be Agents of Grace!

2. Generosity - Our Response to God’s Gift! 

I love the song of grace: “Grace, Grace - God’s Grace! Grace that will pardon and cleanse within!”

How do we respond to that which was given to us by GOD, in Christ? 

We cannot reciprocate in exact change? It is not apples to apples. 

Our knowing of God’s grace makes us new! We are no longer “transactional” in our response. 

Have you experienced someone’s gift to you and think, how can I repay you? 

• Roadside service (unexpected generosity.)
• Maybe it is like receiving something of value that cannot be simply paid back? 
• Perhaps it is receiving good news when you expected nothing but bad news!! 

As we receive and understand the depths of grace we enter into a deeper way of life — We are transformed!! 

We see life as transformational not transactional. 

** We give because we have been given! ** 

Jesus Calling devotional: 

I AM WITH YOU AND FOR YOU. You face nothing alone--nothing! When you feel anxious, know that you are focusing on the visible world and leaving Me out of the picture. 

The remedy is simple: Fix your eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. Verbalize your trust in Me, the Living One who sees you always. I will get you safely through this day and all your days.

But you can find Me only in the present. 

Each day is a precious gift from My Father. 

How ridiculous to grasp for future gifts when today's is set before you! Receive today's gift gratefully, unwrapping it tenderly and delving into its depths. As you savor this gift, you find Me.

3. Reciprocity - Our gift to others! (Ambassadors of Reconciliation.)

I like to think of reconciliation as reciprocity. It is the act of generosity that is received and then acted upon toward someone else! 

Reciprocity is universal and at the core of civilization! Every culture needs it to survive. 

It goes beyond a fair exchange! 

For Christians: It is defined as the Golden Rule::

My friend, Malcolm Evans (died March 2021) was a businessman that wrote a book on business ethics: Leading Business by the Book.

Family members gathered and reflected stating: (He was) A dedicated family man, businessman, and philanthropist, Malcolm would often say, "You can't outgive God", and lived his life as a testament to this truth found in the scriptures (Malachi 3:8-12).

Quote from Malcolm’s book: 

Whatever city or country you do business in, you'll find a parallel of the Golden Rule- often known as

"the ethic of reciprocity." 

…However, you'll discover that many of these are phrased in the negative sense. 

When Jesus presented the Golden Rule, he presented it in a positive fashion.You see, it's one thing to say, “Don't do to others what you don't want done to you." But it's quite another to follow Christ's words, "Do to others as you would have them do to you" (Luke 6:31).

Confucius said, "Do not do to others what you do not want them to do to you" (Analects 15:23). 

The Hindus teach, "This is the sum of duty: do not do to others what would cause pain if done to you" (Mahabharata 5:1517). 

Other religions seem to reflect Christ's positive view in concept

but not in practice. For example, Islam teaches: “None of you [truly]

believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself" (Number 13 of Imam Al-Nawawi's Forty Hadiths). *

Christianity goes beyond simply a reply …. We call it being a blessing!

The law of blessing says that we will always reap what we have sow. This is, in part RECIPROCITY!

The way to develop RECIPROCITY is through GENEROSITY!  

Let me illustrate this from Malachi’s perspective: 

Malachi 3:11-12 (We find an IF-THEN principle …. Test GOD in our generosity! 

“Your crops will be abundant, for I will guard them from insects and disease. Your grapes will not fall from the vine before they are ripe,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. “Then all nations will call you blessed, for your land will be such a delight,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.”

As agents of grace we can bless others because of what GOD did on our behalf! 

We are called to live out the Law of Blessing:

Maybe it is a waitress.

Perhaps it is being courteous to others and even to the cashier.

It is going the extra mile in our generosity!

As you do unto the least of those among you! It is doing for someone who cannot reciprocate in the same way! Yet, it is like giving the gift of “treating them as God’s creation!”

— We are called to be Agents of Grace!

— We are called to the ministry of reconciliation! 

On 2/2/2022 reports tells us that Winter will continue for 6-weeks according to Punxsutawney Phil

He has made his 2022 Groundhog Day prediction: winter is here to stay! 

The furry rodent saw his shadow Wednesday morning in Punxsutawney, Pa., therefore predicting six more weeks of winter.

Perhaps you took those couple of days off due to the snowstorm that we just had and watched a few new movies like Groundhogs Day.

Groundhog Day is a 1993 American fantasy comedy film directed by Harold Ramis and written by Ramis and Danny Rubin. It stars Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell and Chris Elliott. Murray portrays Phil Connors, a cynical television weatherman covering the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, who becomes trapped in a time loop, forcing him to relive February 2nd repeatedly. 

“It is only when Phil stops using the loops to indulge his own desires and instead uses them to selflessly help others that he is freed.[11] In repeatedly failing to save the old homeless man, Phil is also forced to accept that he is not a god.[134] Similarly, regardless of how much knowledge he gains about Rita, and despite his accomplishments learned throughout the loops, he is unable to impress her enough to earn her love. He wins her over only once he stops trying to do so, when he demonstrates genuine care for helping others without fakery or self-interest, knowing that the day will likely reset and it will have all been for naught. Only then does Rita return his affections.[10][11][129] 

The aspects of Rita that Phil mocked at the start of the film have become qualities he admires and respects, and in turn, Phil receives Rita's love not because he desires it, but because he has genuinely become the type of person that Rita could love.”

I love what can summarized this topic by Ed Jarrett of CT.com — 

He writes: “Reconciliation involves forgiveness. But it goes beyond forgiveness. When I forgive someone, there is no guarantee that we will have a restored relationship. It may well be that even after I have forgiven someone that we remain estranged. Reconciliation, however, restores the relationship.

Forgiveness may be one-sided. But reconciliation requires both parties to be willing to participate in restoring the relationship. It is always possible, and expected, for me to forgive. 

But reconciliation will not be possible if the other party is not willing to participate.

Yet, as we receive God’s Grace, we become people of Generosity (a response to God’s love that transformed us) — And we then can bless others (even if they don’t reciprocate) because it points to the same hope of transformation that GOD offers!
